Introduction:
Uji City, located in the heart of Japan, has a long history of romance and beauty, as immortalized in Murasaki Shikibu’s The Tale of Genji. To highlight this rich cultural heritage, Uji City has partnered with Kyoto Animation, one of Japan’s most renowned animation studios, to create a tourism campaign that brings the city’s storied past to life.

Background:
The campaign was first announced in October 2023 with a stunning visual poster. Yesterday, the commercial for the town was released, showcasing the historical context of the area through beautiful animation. The short 30-second version of the video is available above, while a longer six-minute version will be available at select locations in Uji City from March 9.

Creative Team:
The commercial was directed by Takuya Yamamura, who also directed the critically acclaimed anime series Tsurune. Kengo Narimatsu, key animator on Sound! Euphonium: Ensemble Contest Arc, provided character designs and animation direction. Aiyumei Yoshida, key animator on Sound! Euphonium: Ensemble Contest Arc, storyboarded and unit-directed the short. Azusa Tadokoro, known for her role as Azusa Sasaki in Sound! Euphonium, provided the voice work for the commercial.
