Godzilla Minus One Film Passes Six Billion Yen in the Kaiju’s Home Country of Japan
It’s been a few months since we last updated you on Godzilla Minus One’s Japanese box office performance, but today TOHO has revealed that the historical epic has surpassed 6 billion yen (US$41.56 million) in domestic ticket sales. As of March 3 and 122 days in theaters, the film has brought in an impressive 6.01 billion yen on the back of 3.92 million tickets sold. This makes Godzilla Minus One the highest-grossing live-action Japanese film of 2023, overtaking Kingdom 3: The Flame of Destiny’s 5.6 billion yen takings.
Director Takashi Yamazaki expressed his gratitude to fans for their support of the film in a comment released on TOHO Movie Twitter account: “Thank you to all the fans who have supported ‘Godzilla Minus One.’ We are honored to have achieved this milestone, and we will continue to work hard to bring you exciting and entertaining films.”
Godzilla Minus One opened in Japan on November 3, 2023, before it rolled out internationally on December 1. The film is nominated for a Best Visual Effects Academy Award as well as Best Picture, Best Director, and more at the Japan Academy Film Prize. TOHO released the film around the world directly and through local distributors, describing it as “a historical epic that reimagines the classic monster movie in a whole new way.”
With this latest achievement, Godzilla Minus One continues to make waves in the Japanese box office and beyond. We can’t wait to see what the future holds for this groundbreaking film.
